From One Soggy Ball to Sling Leash
One summer afternoon, I was walking Dudley, my mini dachshund, when he froze in his classic “downward dog” stretch, staring and one inch eyeballing something in the grass. My first thought was, Uh-oh, what’s he found? Don’t roll in $%it! But when I got closer, I saw Dudley had discovered a chewed-up, soggy cricket ball. I didn’t want to touch it, so I looped his leash around it and gave it a good yank—sending it flying about 10 meters. Dudley took off like a rocket chasing it, and that’s when the idea hit me: What if I could launch balls with my dog leash?
The $1 Idea That Went Fetch
It all started with a $1 shop silicone egg poacher cut and stapled to some old webbing...and it worked! I showed a mate, and surprisingly, he thought it was a good idea! Then, we took it to some great local Aussie designers and kept testing, tweaking, redesigning and improving it until we created the Sling Leash! A leash that stores a ball near the handle and launches with crazy accuracy and distance. The problem was, with the bags of balls being launched during testing, Dudley worked out the fetching wasn’t about him and his early passion waned!
